Dr. Medhavi Sudarshan is an accomplished zoologist, teacher, and researcher with 9+ years of research experience and 5+ years of teaching experience. She is currently serving as Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology (P.G. Centre) at J.N.L. College, Khagaul, Patliputra University, Patna (November 2019–Present), where she is engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research supervision, and academic leadership.
Previously, she served in research positions of significant responsibility, including Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Molecular Biology Lab, RMRIMS (ICMR), Patna (2015–2016), where she conducted ICMR-funded research on lymphocyte activation and T-cell regulation in visceral leishmaniasis, and Junior Research Officer at the Vector Biology and Control Lab, RMRIMS (2014–2015), contributing to Bill Gates-funded projects on integrated decision support systems for leishmaniasis control. During her doctoral studies at Banaras Hindu University (2009–2014), she held CSIR Junior and Senior Research Fellow positions, conducting rigorous clinical, molecular, and experimental investigations under the mentorship of Dr. Shyam Sundar.

Dr. Sudarshan has developed a robust multidisciplinary research portfolio spanning infection biology, entomology, immunology, molecular biology, and natural-product-based therapeutics. Her research interests encompass host–pathogen interactions, immune regulation, visceral leishmaniasis pathogenesis, and plant-derived therapeutic approaches for metabolic health. She has authored 30+ research papers published in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, BMC Medical Genetics, Immunology, and Microbes and Infection. Her publications address critical topics including parasite kinetics, immune checkpoint regulation, HLA Class II expression modulations, diagnostic innovation for visceral leishmaniasis, and determinants of disease progression. Her work reflects contributions to nationally and internationally funded research projects and demonstrates active engagement in collaborative scientific inquiry.
Scholarly Contributions & Book Chapters
Beyond journal publications, Dr. Sudarshan has contributed to 3+ book chapters and edited-book contributions. Her scholarly work includes a chapter on visceral leishmaniasis asymptomatic facts in the IntechOpen publication Leishmaniasis – General Aspects of a Neglected Disease (2021), and contributions to edited volumes addressing Dashavatara theory and human evolution, India's developmental progression, and comprehensive approaches to Type 2 diabetes management through genetic and lifestyle perspectives. These contributions demonstrate her ability to synthesize complex scientific knowledge for diverse academic audiences.
Research Projects & Funding
Dr. Sudarshan has contributed substantially to externally funded research initiatives across multiple funding agencies. She has worked on ICMR-funded projects investigating immune regulation in visceral leishmaniasis, CSIR-funded projects examining molecular responses in plant biology and parasite kinetics, and Bill Gates-funded projects focused on vector control and integrated decision support systems. Her current research project involves comparative therapeutic evaluation of flaxseed and chia seed extracts in experimental Type 2 diabetes models, emphasizing nutraceutical strategies and immunometabolic interventions. This research direction reflects her evolving commitment to translational science addressing modern metabolic health challenges.
Teaching & Academic Contributions
Since November 2019, Dr. Sudarshan has provided comprehensive instruction at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at J.N.L. College, teaching theory and practical courses across the zoology curriculum. She actively guides M.Sc. and Ph.D. research scholars; her current mentee, Lisha Akansha, is investigating the antidiabetic therapeutic effects of chia and flax seeds in diabetic mouse models. Her research guidance emphasizes phytochemical profiling, antioxidant assays, metabolic biomarkers, insulin homeostasis, and experimental diabetes—emerging areas of significant academic importance.
Awards & Honours
Dr. Sudarshan's academic achievements include the ICMR Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award (2015), recognizing her doctoral research excellence, and the CSIR Junior Research Fellowship Award (2008). She has successfully qualified the CSIR-NET examination (2006, 2008) and the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Examination (2006, 2007), demonstrating strong foundational competency in research methodology and cross-disciplinary scientific thinking.
