Prof. Rajinder Kumar Ganjoo is a distinguished Indian geologist, Quaternary scientist, and glaciologist with over four decades of academic, research, and administrative experience. He served as Professor of Geology at the University of Jammu from 2006 to 2021 after progressing through the positions of Lecturer and Reader. He began his professional career as a Scientific Assistant at Deccan College Post-Graduate & Research Institute, Pune (1985–1992).
His areas of specialization include Quaternary Palaeoclimate of the High Himalaya (Ladakh), Glaciology, Climate Change, Geomorphology, and Himalayan Environmental Studies. Throughout his career, he has played a pioneering role in advancing the understanding of Himalayan glacier dynamics, palaeoclimate reconstruction, and environmental change.
Research Contributions & Scientific Excellence
Prof. Ganjoo is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research on Himalayan glaciers and climate change. His scientific investigations on the glaciers of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh generated robust evidence challenging the widely publicized prediction of rapid disappearance of Himalayan glaciers. His findings were acknowledged by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, and incorporated into the landmark publication "Himalayan Glaciers – A State-of-the-Art Review of Glacial Studies, Glacial Retreat and Climate Change."
His research spans:
- Himalayan glacier dynamics and mass balance studies.
- Quaternary palaeoclimate reconstruction of the High Himalaya.
- Geomorphology and landscape evolution.
- Climate change and environmental sustainability.
- Early human adaptation in mountain environments.
- Geoarchaeology and Quaternary geology.
His work has significantly influenced glacier research, climate policy discussions, and Himalayan environmental science.
