He obtained his MBBS from Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana in 1981, followed by an MD in Forensic Medicine from Government Medical College, Amritsar/Guru Nanak Dev University in 1989. Further strengthening his academic credentials, he earned the prestigious Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Forensic Medicine in 2006.

Prof. Chanana has served in several eminent institutions across Punjab, progressing from Medical Officer to Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine. His distinguished academic career includes appointments at Government Medical College, Amritsar, Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, and Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot. Since September 2025, he has been serving as the Medical Superintendent of Uppal Neuro Hospital, Multispecialty Centre and Research Institute, Amritsar, where he oversees hospital administration and clinical governance.
