A gold medalist of Assam Agricultural University, Dr. Sarma completed his B.V.Sc. & A.H. in 1978, followed by an M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Microbiology in 1981 and a Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology in 1987 from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. He subsequently completed a one-year post-doctoral research programme at the AFRC Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright Laboratory, Surrey, United Kingdom, during 1990–1991.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Sarma served as Professor and ICAR-National Fellow in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Assam Agricultural University, from 2005 to 2017. He also served as Director of the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig, Guwahati, from 2013 to 2017, providing scientific and institutional leadership in pig health, disease control, breeding, and production.
Research Expertise & Scientific Contributions
Dr. Sarma's principal area of expertise is Veterinary Microbiology, with particular emphasis on viral diseases of livestock and poultry, vaccine development, infectious disease epidemiology, molecular characterization of pathogens, diagnostics, immunology, and animal health.
One of his important areas of research has been Classical Swine Fever (CSF). His research included the isolation and characterization of local CSF virus strains, epidemiological investigations, molecular characterization of CSF virus, development of a vaccine candidate from a local isolate, and production and characterization of monoclonal antibodies against immunogenic CSF viral proteins.
He has also made substantial contributions to research on Foot-and-Mouth Disease, fowl pox, duck plague, Newcastle disease, porcine viral diseases, Escherichia coli, antimicrobial resistance, Toxoplasma gondii, and other infectious diseases affecting domestic and economically important animals.
His research has contributed to the development of rapid diagnostic approaches and suitable vaccine candidates from field isolates, strengthening disease surveillance and control in animal populations.
Research Publications & Scholarly Contributions
Dr. Sarma has produced an extensive body of scientific literature throughout his career. He has published more than 200 research papers in areas related principally to Veterinary Microbiology and infectious diseases. His scholarly contributions also include two textbooks, eleven reference books, and several book chapters.
His publications cover important subjects including vaccine-induced immunity, viral epidemiology, ELISA-based diagnosis, molecular characterization of pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, classical swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, porcine diseases, and emerging infectious diseases.
His research has appeared in national and international scientific journals, demonstrating the breadth and sustained nature of his scholarly contribution to veterinary science.
Contributions to Pig Health & Production
As Director of the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig, Dr. Sarma contributed significantly to the advancement of scientific pig farming in India. His work extended beyond laboratory research to the practical application of veterinary science for improving animal production and farmer livelihoods.
He was involved in the development of packages of practices for scientific pig farming and contributed to the release of eight crossbred pig varieties aimed at improving economic returns from pig production.
He also participated in technology transfer initiatives, including the processing of value-added pork products and scientific slaughter practices, thereby helping translate scientific knowledge into practical technologies for the livestock sector.
Teaching, Mentorship & Academic Leadership
Throughout his career, Dr. Sarma has combined research with extensive teaching and academic mentorship. As Professor and Head of Veterinary Microbiology, he contributed to postgraduate and doctoral education and guided several Ph.D. and postgraduate students.
His long-standing academic involvement has helped develop researchers and veterinary professionals in the fields of microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases, diagnostics, and animal health.
His service as Director of an ICAR national research centre further demonstrates his ability to provide scientific, administrative, and institutional leadership.
Awards, Fellowships & Professional Recognition
Dr. Sarma's contributions have received recognition from academic, governmental, and professional organizations. His distinctions include the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for outstanding research in tribal farming systems and an Award of Honour for contribution to agriculture and allied sciences from the Government of Punjab, India.
He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and a Fellow of the Indian Association of Veterinary Microbiologists, Immunologists and Specialists in Infectious Diseases (IAVMI). He is also a life member of several professional scientific societies.
In 2022, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from IAVMI in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of Veterinary Microbiology.
