Mrs. Nandhini V. Manickam is an early-career interdisciplinary researcher associated with PSG College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore. Her doctoral research, supported through the UGC-SJSGC scheme, investigates the pharmacological potential of Cocos nucifera bee pollen against metabolism-driven cardiovascular and endocrine complications. She has developed expertise spanning natural-product research, experimental pharmacology, molecular biology, phytochemical analysis, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, systems pharmacology, and laboratory animal research.

Her earlier research includes a DBT-supported postgraduate project investigating multifloral bee pollen and Muntingia calabura leaves against rheumatoid arthritis using in vitro screening, chromatographic analysis, and molecular docking. She has also contributed to research investigating duck eggshell-derived compounds for cardiovascular applications.

Doctoral Research & Scientific Contribution

Her doctoral programme follows a research-to-translation pipeline beginning with authentication and characterisation of Cocos nucifera bee pollen and progressing through pharmacological, computational and preclinical validation. The research incorporates DNA barcoding, PCR-based approaches, GC-MS, LC-MS, FT-IR, UV-VIS and HPTLC for molecular and phytochemical profiling.

Her work further evaluates antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, anti-hypercholesterolemic, anti-obesity and antidiabetic activities. She has developed chitosan-based bee-pollen nano-formulations and investigated their physicochemical properties, encapsulation/loading capacity and release characteristics using techniques including DLS, zeta potential, XRD, SEM and TEM.

The research also incorporates cell-based assays, antimicrobial and cytotoxicity studies, zebrafish larval toxicological investigations, and in vivo studies using Sprague-Dawley rats. Her systems-level approach examines cardiovascular, metabolic and endocrine parameters together with biochemical, hormonal, gene-expression and histopathological outcomes in organs including the heart, liver, kidney, adipose tissue, testes and ovaries.

Research Interests & Distinctiveness

A major strength of Mrs. Nandhini Manickam's research is its interdisciplinary integration of apiculture, pharmacognosy, molecular biology, biotechnology, experimental pharmacology, cardiometabolic research, endocrinology, nanotechnology, bioinformatics and systems biology.

Her research particularly addresses the interconnected nature of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and reproductive-endocrine dysfunction, including poly-metabolic ovarian syndrome. She also incorporates sex-responsive investigations by examining male- and female-specific metabolic, cardiovascular, reproductive and hormonal responses.

Publications & Research Outputs

Mrs. Nandhini Manickam has contributed to research publications addressing bee-pollen phytochemistry, cardiometabolic activity, nutritional composition, experimental disease models and systems-level pharmacology. Her recent publications include studies on the phytochemical profiling and cardiometabolic potential of Cocos nucifera bee pollen and the influence of solvent polarity on its nutritional and phytochemical composition.

Her research outputs also include work on high-fat-diet formulations for experimental hypercholesterolemia and collaborative research on metabolomic and network-based evaluation of natural compounds. A 2026 patent-related publication, “Coco Pollen Bites by Melli Bees: The Sweet Healer from Hive Proteins to Health Pathway,” reflects her efforts toward translating research findings into a potential value-added product.
