Dr. Anil Kumar V S is an accomplished Botanist, Plant Taxonomist, and researcher with extensive expertise in plant systematics, biodiversity, molecular taxonomy, and the floristic exploration of the southern Western Ghats of Kerala. He demonstrated outstanding academic performance by securing First Rank with a Gold Medal in his Postgraduate Degree in Botany from the University of Kerala in 1994, after securing First Rank in his Graduate Course in 1992. He also obtained an A Grade in M.Phil. from the University of Kerala and He is working in Department of Collegiate Education.
Research Expertise
Dr. Anil Kumar V S has developed significant expertise in plant identification, herbarium preparation, molecular systematics, micromorphology, chemotaxonomy, and plant biodiversity. His research has particularly focused on the families Amaranthaceae, Acanthaceae, Solanaceae, and Poaceae.
His work combines conventional taxonomic approaches with modern techniques including ISSR, ITS and chloroplast gene markers, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and FTIR spectral analysis. He has undertaken systematic studies of Solanum species using micromorphological and molecular data and has reported the first species from India in his research area.
Major Scientific Contributions
One of Dr. Anil Kumar V S's notable contributions is his extensive exploration and documentation of the plant diversity of the southern Western Ghats of Kerala. He has reported 23 new plant taxa, with these findings published in international indexed journals. His research contributes substantially to plant taxonomy, biodiversity documentation, conservation, and the scientific understanding of India's Western Ghats flora.
He has also conducted research on genetic diversity and differentiation among Solanum species, foliar micromorphology, spermoderm sculpturing, protein polymorphism, RAPD and ISSR markers, phytochemical properties, FTIR spectroscopy, and the systematic identification of pharmacognostically important plants.
Another notable recognition of Dr. Anil Kumar V S’s contributions to botanical research is the naming of a plant species, Drymaria anilii, in his honour. This botanical eponymy represents a distinctive recognition associated with his work and adds to his scientific profile in plant taxonomy and floristic research. It also highlights his association with the documentation and scientific study of plant diversity.
Research Supervision & Academic Contribution
Dr. Anil Kumar V S has supervised 32 M.Sc. dissertations and one M.Phil. dissertation, and is currently guiding three Ph.D. scholars. Two scholars have already been awarded Ph.D. degrees under his guidance, demonstrating his contribution to advanced research training and mentorship.
He has served as a Member of the Board of Studies for Postgraduate programmes at the University of Kerala and as a Member of the Board of Studies at Mar Ivanios College (Autonomous), Kerala. He has also contributed as a subject expert for various government academic programmes and for the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kerala.
