| Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda | UNITED STATES
Dr. Shyamala (Sarvepalli) Mruthinti is a distinguished neuroscientist, immunologist, biotechnology entrepreneur, and educator with more than four decades of experience in biomedical research, laboratory leadership, higher education, and biotechnology innovation. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Botany from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, an M.A. in Philosophy, and a B.Sc. in Botany, Chemistry, and Zoology from Osmania University. She began her academic career as a Lecturer in Botany and later served as a CSIR Senior Research Scientist before transitioning to biomedical and molecular research.
From 1990 to 1996, she served as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Monoclonal Antibody Core Facility at the Medical College of Georgia. She subsequently worked at the Augusta VA Medical Center from 1996 to 2012, advancing to Research Pharmacologist at the professor level and serving as a Principal Investigator, Alzheimer’s Research Project Manager, and independent laboratory director.
Research Excellence in Neuroscience and Alzheimer’s Disease
Dr. Mruthinti has made significant contributions to Alzheimer’s disease research, particularly to the study of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), amyloid-beta (Aβ), neuroinflammation, and autoimmune responses. Her research investigated the role of cell-surface RAGE in facilitating the transport of neurotoxic Aβ42 across the blood–brain barrier. She also examined circulating anti-RAGE and anti-Aβ antibodies as potential indicators associated with dementia severity and cognitive performance.
As Principal Investigator, she secured a competitive VA Merit Review Grant of $650,000 for a three-year Alzheimer’s research project, with total funding exceeding $700,000 after cost-of-living adjustments. She also received a $100,000 VISN-7 Career Development Award and additional grants supporting research on Parkinson’s disease, cancer, and monoclonal antibodies.
Scientific Innovation and Patents
A major achievement of Dr. Mruthinti’s research was the development of an oral Alzheimer’s vaccine concept using high-molecular-weight amyloid-beta as a carrier for vaccine antigens. She was the primary inventor, with 95% inventorship, on U.S. Patent Application Publication No. US20100297160A1, which describes this concept.
Her research also yielded specialized monoclonal antibodies, including the anti-RAGE antibody RD9C2, which was commercially produced and distributed internationally for research applications. Her scientific record includes three documented patentable inventions.
Biotechnology Entrepreneurship
Dr. Mruthinti has translated scientific research into biotechnology applications. She was a founding partner, shareholder, and Antibody Production Manager at Immuno-Rx, Inc., and subsequently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Datta ImmunoChem, Inc., a Medical College of Georgia spin-off. Through Datta ImmunoChem, she led the commercialization of the RD9C2 anti-RAGE monoclonal antibody under an exclusive institutional license.
Academic Leadership and Mentorship
Throughout her career, Dr. Mruthinti has demonstrated leadership in laboratory management, research training, and scientific mentorship. At the Augusta VA Medical Center, she established and directed an independent Alzheimer’s research laboratory and supervised research personnel. She mentored summer students, Ph.D. scholars, and M.D.–Ph.D. trainees, and contributed to experimental design and research planning for doctoral projects.
In her earlier role as Manager and Key Operator of a CAP-accredited Flow Cytometry Laboratory, she screened samples from more than 200 patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and other malignancies. She also contributed to research on chronic lymphocytic leukemia and ovarian cancer.
Publications and Scholarly Contributions
Dr. Mruthinti has published peer-reviewed research on Alzheimer’s disease, RAGE–Aβ interactions, autoimmunity, amyloid toxicity, monoclonal antibodies, ovarian cancer, and neuronal biology. Her publications have appeared in journals such as Journal of Gerontology, Current Alzheimer Research, Neuroscience, Journal of Molecular Neuroscience, and Neurobiology of Aging. Her work has advanced understanding of the molecular and immunological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disease.
International Academic Engagement
Dr. Mruthinti has been invited to serve as a keynote speaker, session chair, and expert lecturer at numerous national and international scientific and academic forums. Her engagements have included the International Conference of Neuroscience and the Science of Consciousness Conference, as well as lectures at Kerala University of Health Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology, University of Chandigarh, Asha Psychiatry Hospital in Hyderabad, Osmania University and its arts and science colleges, and other scientific and healthcare institutions.
In December 2025, she delivered a keynote address at the International Conference on Biotechnological Innovations for Sustainable Development at Osmania University and received the Best Technologist Innovators for Sustainable Development award.
Awards and Recognition
Her honors include the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, a VA Performance Award, a Certificate of Appreciation for Alzheimer’s research and institutional service, Ten-Year and Fifteen-Year Federal Government Service Awards, a CSIR Senior Research Fellowship, and a Junior Research Fellowship from the University Grants Commission. Her 2025 award further recognized her contributions to technological innovation for sustainable development.
Professional Service and Public Education
Dr. Mruthinti has served as a voting member of the VA Research and Development Committee and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. She has also reviewed scientific manuscripts and grant proposals. Beyond laboratory research, she shares scientific knowledge through public lectures and educational initiatives on brain health, healthy aging, immunity, meditation, and mind–body well-being.
Books and Current Scholarly Work
She has completed a manuscript titled Better Understanding of Alzheimer’s: From a Holistic View of the Brain–Mind–Consciousness and is preparing The Science of Being and Becoming – From Particles, Matter, Mind to Universal Consciousness. These works reflect her interdisciplinary interests in neuroscience, immunology, consciousness, and human well-being.
Case for the Women Researcher Award – Scientific Laurels
Dr. Shyamala Mruthinti is a strong candidate for the Women Researcher Award – Scientific Laurels in recognition of her sustained contributions to neuroscience, immunology, Alzheimer’s disease research, biotechnology, and scientific education. Her record as a Principal Investigator on federally funded research, recipient of competitive grants, primary inventor of an Alzheimer’s vaccine concept described in a U.S. patent application, developer and commercializer of monoclonal antibody technology, biotechnology entrepreneur, academic mentor, and international scientific speaker demonstrates research excellence and innovation.
Her investigations into the AGE–RAGE–amyloid-beta pathway and its relationship to Alzheimer’s disease, neuroinflammation, autoimmunity, and cognitive decline have contributed to an important area of biomedical research. Together with her leadership in translating laboratory discoveries into biotechnology applications and mentoring future researchers, these achievements provide a compelling basis for her nomination.
