Dr. Jayanthi Rajendran is an accomplished academician and medical biochemistry researcher with 17 years of teaching and research experience. She began her professional career as a Tutor at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI), Puducherry, in 2009. She was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2019 and subsequently to Associate Professor in 2024, a position she continues to hold. She has also undertaken important academic coordination responsibilities for M.Sc. Medical Biochemistry, IQAC, ISO and NAAC activities.
Research Expertise & Contributions
Dr. Rajendran's research interests focus primarily on clinical biochemistry, diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, metabolic disorders, gene polymorphisms, oxidative stress, nutritional biochemistry, thyroid disorders and biochemical biomarkers. Her work particularly investigates molecular and biochemical mechanisms associated with clinically euthyroid type 2 diabetes, obesity, tobacco use and diabetic complications.
She has contributed to 48 original research publications and has been actively involved in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research supervision. Her research portfolio includes studies on adiponectin, NADPH oxidase, heme oxygenase, omentin-1, DNA repair genes, vitamin D receptor polymorphism, renalase, astaxanthin, galectins, fatty acid binding protein-1 and one-carbon metabolism.
Research Projects & Funding
Dr. Rajendran has served as Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator, Guide and Co-Guide in numerous research projects. Notably, she has led funded faculty projects supported by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, including research on gene polymorphisms and insulin resistance, as well as DNA repair genes and adiponectin in tobacco users. She is currently involved in ongoing Ph.D. projects and a 2026 SBV-funded project on MTHFR C677T, LINE-1, one-carbon metabolites and diet in type 2 diabetes.
Her research supervision spans UG, PG and Ph.D. levels, demonstrating sustained commitment to developing young researchers and advancing medical biochemistry research.
Scientific Presentations & Academic Engagement
Dr. Rajendran has presented scientific abstracts at institutional, national and international platforms on subjects including glycemic control, hemoglobin and bilirubin status, insulin resistance, adiponectin gene polymorphisms, oxidative stress and DNA repair genes. She has also served as a resource person for academic workshops, including sessions on biotoxin safety hazards and blood-vessel health.
Training, FDPs & Professional Development
She has continuously strengthened her academic and research competencies through workshops, FDPs and certification programmes covering biomedical research, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, biomedical ethics, medical education technology, curriculum mapping, MCQ validation, research publication, competency-based education, scientific writing, Good Clinical Practice, AI in higher education and medical laboratory/patient safety. Her participation in BMJ's Research to Publication programme further reflects her commitment to research quality and scientific communication.
Patents & Innovation
Dr. Rajendran has contributed to innovation through the published patent titled “Formulation of Diacakes and analysis on its nutritional with quality characteristics,” demonstrating an interest in translating research into practical nutritional and health-oriented applications.
Awards & Recognition
Her academic contributions have been recognized through several honours, including an Appreciation Certificate for dedicated service toward academic progress of students requiring additional curricular support (SNACS), an Appreciation Certificate and cash award for publication, and Second Prize for Manuscript Writing in a DHR–ICMR-sponsored workshop. She was also granted Ph.D. guideship by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth.
Reviewer, Editorial & Educational Contributions
Dr. Rajendran has contributed to scholarly peer review and editorial activities, receiving Certificates of Excellence in Reviewing from the Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research (2023) and Asian Journal of Research in Nephrology (2024). She has also served as an Editorial Board Member of Biomedical Journal.
Beyond conventional teaching, she has developed innovative e-learning and teaching resources, including YouTube-based educational content, role-play activities, an ECE resource on myocardial infarction and obesity, and an online Udemy course on “Biochemistry in Health & Diseases – Cell to Clinics.” These activities demonstrate her commitment to technology-enabled and learner-centred medical education.
