Dr. Gopalakrishnan Chellappan is an accomplished Plant Pathologist and Professor at the Department of Rice, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. With more than two decades of dedicated service in agricultural research, teaching, and extension, he has established himself as a leading expert in rice pathology, plant disease diagnostics, disease forecasting, integrated disease management, and molecular plant pathology. His research has significantly contributed to improving rice health and sustainable crop production through innovative disease surveillance systems, rapid pathogen detection technologies, and environmentally friendly disease management strategies.
Research Contributions
Dr. Gopalakrishnan's research spans diverse areas of plant pathology with particular emphasis on rice diseases including blast, sheath rot, bacterial leaf blight, brown spot, false smut, and seed-borne fungal pathogens. His pioneering work on Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) diagnostics has enabled rapid and field-level detection of important rice pathogens. He has also contributed significantly to bacteriophage-based biocontrol, silicon-induced disease resistance, epidemiological modelling, machine learning-based disease prediction, and integrated biological disease management.
His recent research integrating molecular diagnostics, spore trapping technology, artificial intelligence, weather-based forecasting, and sustainable disease management has greatly strengthened climate-resilient rice production systems.
