Dr. Sakuru Venkata Sai Prasad is an eminent agricultural scientist specializing in Genetics and Plant Breeding, with distinguished contributions to wheat improvement, rust resistance breeding, bio-fortification, and climate-resilient crop development. After completing his doctoral studies at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), he joined the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1995 at the Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute.

Over nearly three decades of scientific service, he has emerged as a leading researcher in wheat genetics, physiological breeding, molecular breeding, and disease resistance, particularly focusing on adaptation to climate change, drought tolerance, and rust resistance in wheat.

Research Contributions & Scientific Achievements

Dr. Sai Prasad has made remarkable contributions toward the development of climate-resilient and high-yielding wheat varieties. He played a major role in developing:

  • 33 improved crop varieties including:
    • 17 bread wheat varieties
    • 11 durum wheat varieties
    • 2 fodder oat varieties
    • 1 field pea variety
    • 2 lentil varieties

He was also associated with the development of 22 additional improved wheat varieties and several registered genetic stocks at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources.

A major milestone of his career is the development of seven bio-fortified wheat varieties:

  • HI 8663
  • HI 8659
  • HI 8777
  • HI 1633
  • HI 1634
  • HI 1636
  • HI 1650

These varieties contributed significantly to nutritional security and sustainable wheat production in India.

His pioneering research in molecular breeding led to pyramiding of resistance genes Sr2 and Sr36 in durum wheat through Marker Assisted Selection (MAS), improving resistance against stem rust race 117 group. He also identified diverse sources of stem and leaf rust resistance in durum wheat germplasm, broadening the genetic base for disease resistance breeding.

Dr. Sai Prasad’s research further established the importance of:

  • deep root systems for drought adaptation,
  • cooler canopy temperature for heat tolerance,
  • physiological breeding for water-use efficiency,
  • and durable adult plant resistance (APR) against wheat rust diseases.
