Dr. Pravas Ranjan Sahoo is a veterinary scientist and researcher specializing in Animal Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Nanotechnology, Biosensors, Host–Pathogen Interaction, and Computational Biology. He holds a DVM, MVSc in Animal Biochemistry, and Ph.D. in Animal Biochemistry. His academic career has been distinguished by strong research training, competitive fellowships, scientific presentations, and recognition at national and international platforms.

During his academic journey, Dr. Sahoo received a Merit Scholarship for academic excellence throughout his B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme, followed by the ICAR-NET Award (2014) and the ICAR-Junior Research Fellowship (2012–2014) for his MVSc studies. He was subsequently awarded the ICAR-Senior Research Fellowship (2020–2023) during his doctoral research at ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI). He also received the ICAR-Netaji Subhas International Fellowship (2018–2019) for doctoral research at Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany.

Research Expertise & Scientific Contributions

Dr. Sahoo's research encompasses innovative approaches to veterinary diagnostics, infectious diseases, molecular mechanisms of host–pathogen interactions, and therapeutic discovery. A major area of his work is the development of rapid, point-of-care diagnostic technologies, particularly gold nanoparticle-based immunosensors and lateral flow assays for detecting livestock pathogens and contaminants.

His research on Salmonella Typhimurium investigates molecular regulators such as NarL and their role in bacterial survival, intracellular replication, host lipid metabolism, and pathogenesis. He has also contributed to computational studies involving molecular docking, protein modelling, structural characterization, and the identification of potential therapeutic targets against livestock and zoonotic diseases.

His current research includes the development of a gold nanoparticle-based rapid diagnostic assay for antibiotic residues in milk, field-level diagnostics for bovine Theileria species, and investigation of potential therapeutics for livestock diseases. His ongoing work also extends to anticancer research involving canine mammary tumours.

Research Projects & Leadership

Dr. Sahoo has demonstrated significant research leadership through his involvement as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator in externally funded projects.

As Principal Investigator, he is leading a 2026–2029 project on the anticancer activity of combined Thuja occidentalis and carbolic acid preparations against canine mammary tumour, funded by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

He is also Principal Investigator of a 2025–2027 Young Researcher's Fund project for developing a gold nanoparticle-based rapid diagnostic assay for antibiotic residues in milk. His Co-PI responsibilities include projects on rapid diagnosis of bovine Theileria infection, biomarkers for Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis infection, and establishment of advanced pathology laboratory facilities for animal disease diagnosis and surveillance.

Dr. Sahoo has produced a substantial body of peer-reviewed research spanning molecular microbiology, veterinary diagnostics, nanotechnology, infectious diseases, computational biology, animal biochemistry, and veterinary medicine. His recent studies address the molecular function of the NarL regulator in Salmonella Typhimurium, host lipid metabolism, bacterial colonization, antimicrobial nanoparticles, postbiotics, and computational identification of therapeutic compounds. His earlier work established expertise in gold nanoparticles, surface plasmon resonance biosensors, loop-mediated isothermal amplification, animal disease diagnostics, and in-silico structural biology.

Dr. Sahoo has contributed extensively to scientific literature through five books and numerous book chapters. His authored books include Recent Advances in Nanotechnology, Veterinary Vaccines, Recent Advances in Veterinary Care, Futuristic Trends in Biotechnology, and A Capsule on General Veterinary Biochemistry.

He has also contributed chapters to publications associated with Springer and ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, covering topics such as chitosan-based delivery systems, nanotheranostic medicine, point-of-care nanodiagnostics, biosensors, protein modelling, molecular biology techniques, ELISA, affinity chromatography, and Western blotting.
