Dr. Mageshwaran Vellaichamy is an accomplished agricultural microbiologist and ICAR scientist with extensive experience in agricultural research, microbial biotechnology, and sustainable utilization of agricultural residues. He joined the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) as an Agricultural Research Scientist at the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Hyderabad, on 4 November 2009. He subsequently served as a Scientist at ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), Mumbai, from March 2010 to December 2019. Since 25 December 2019, he has been serving as a Senior Scientist in Agricultural Microbiology at ICAR-National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms (NBAIM), Mau.

He has received prestigious fellowships, including the Indian Agricultural Research Institute Scholarship and Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship for doctoral studies. He also undertook international training in Fermentation Technology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, USA. Mumbai University has recognized him as a teacher for the M.Sc. degree by Research in Microbiology. GB Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar has recognized him as a member in the Advisory committee of the student's research in PhD (Microbiology).

Research Interests

His research interests encompass antimicrobial resistance in soil bacteria, bacterial endophytes for biotic stress management, organic matter recycling, lignocellulosic biomass utilization, solid-state fermentation, and gossypol detoxification. His research particularly focuses on developing microbial and biochemical approaches for sustainable agriculture, crop protection, agricultural waste management, and value addition of cotton by-products.

Research Contributions & Technologies

Dr. Vellaichamy has contributed to the development and promotion of several agricultural technologies. These include the use of endophytic Bacillus subtilis for biocontrol of wilt complex in chickpea, rapid composting of agricultural residues using Kush Bio-Fast Decomposer, bio-enriched compost production from cotton plant stalks, and oyster mushroom cultivation using cotton stalks.

His work has also addressed solid-state fermentation for gossypol reduction and improvement of the nutritive quality of cottonseed cake, as well as an eco-friendly enzymatic process for producing absorbent cotton from non-spinnable short-staple cotton. The Kush Bio-Fast Decomposer technology was certified by ICAR in 2025, and rapid composting technology has been adopted among farmers in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. He has deposited 69 bacterial and 7 fungal cultures at NAIMCC, Mau.

Patents & Innovation

His innovation portfolio includes a patent filed for a novel process for gossypol reduction and nutritive quality improvement in cottonseed cake for use in non-ruminant feed. He has also contributed to the CIRCOT eco-friendly, efficient and rapid-burning crematorium technology.
