Research & Scientific Contributions
Dr. Verma has made significant contributions to the improvement of seed spice crops, particularly fennel, fenugreek, anise, dill and cumin, with research encompassing gamma-ray-induced mutagenesis, genetic variability, germination and seedling responses, morpho-physiological traits, moisture-stress tolerance, and enhancement of yield and quality. His work has contributed to the development and characterization of genetic resources and improved breeding materials.
His research profile includes more than 60 research papers, 5 books, 25 book chapters, 15 training manuals/compendia/bulletins, 5 pamphlets/folders, around 50 popular articles in Hindi and English, 4 lecture compendia, and more than 35 research presentations/abstracts. He has also contributed to the development of 8 varieties/genetic stocks and import 17 cumin germplasm from United States Department of Agriculture, USA.
Patents & Innovation
Dr. Verma has demonstrated an interest in agricultural innovation and technology development and holds 2 patents, including:
- Ber Fruit De-seeder — Patent No. 397305-001, issued in 2023
- Multilayer Solar Dryer — Patent No. 460033-001, issued in 2025
These innovations reflect his broader engagement with agricultural mechanization, quality analysis, and data-oriented scientific applications.

He was conferred Fellow of the Confederation of Horticulture Associations of India (CHAI) in 2018 and Fellow of the Society for Horticultural Research and Development (SHRD) in 2021. He received the Young Scientist Award from the Indian Society of Seed Spices in 2023, the Young Scientist Award from Pragati International Scientific Research Foundation in 2023, and the Best Scientist Award from ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer, in 2020.
He has additionally received multiple Best Oral, Second Best Oral, First Oral, Best Poster, and Second Best Poster Presentation Awards at national and international conferences and seminars, particularly for research on induced mutagenesis, genetic variability, and stress tolerance in seed spices.
Training & Professional Development
His professional development includes specialized training in mutation breeding, genomics-assisted pre-breeding, modern genetics and breeding, plant genetic resource management, climate-change adaptation, seed-quality assurance, multivariate data analysis using R, computer-aided landscape design, and modern breeding approaches for processing, quality and export in horticultural crops.
He completed the three-month Foundation Course for Agricultural Research Service at ICAR-NAARM, Hyderabad, and a three-month specialized training in Mutation Breeding Approaches for Crop Improvement at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
Editorial & Academic Service
Dr. Verma has contributed to scholarly communication as an Editor of the International Journal of Seed Spices during multiple terms and as Editor of the Hindi agricultural magazine Krishi Manjusha and Masala Surabhi.
His professional service includes responsibilities with scientific and horticultural organizations, including serving as Treasurer of The Bougainvillea Society of India (2011–2013) and undertaking organizational responsibilities for scientific conferences, farmer fairs, seminars, training programmes, and agricultural outreach activities.
Conferences, Farmer Outreach & Institutional Contributions
Dr. Verma has been actively involved in organizing and coordinating scientific conferences, seminars, farmer fairs, exhibitions, and capacity-building programmes. He has served as a core team member, organizing committee member, rapporteur, coordinator, and co-convenor for several programmes conducted by ICAR-NRCSS and other agricultural institutions.
Notably, he served as Coordinator of Winter Schools on good agricultural practices and value-chain management in high-value horticultural crops in 2020 and on crop diversification with low-volume, high-value seed spices and horticultural crops in 2022. These activities demonstrate his contribution to scientific dissemination and farmer-oriented agricultural development.
