Dr. Pawan Acharya is an emerging surgical researcher and clinician with professional experience across plastic surgery, breast surgery, trauma and orthopaedics. He has worked with leading NHS institutions in London and Hertfordshire, including Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust, Royal Marsden Hospital, and East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. His current role as a junior clinical fellow in Plastic Surgery at Leeds General Infirmary reflects his growing specialization in reconstructive and plastic surgery. He previously worked at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where he completed a Plastic Surgery-themed Local Core Surgical Training (CST) programme
Clinical & Surgical Experience
Dr. Acharya has developed broad clinical exposure through appointments in plastic surgery, breast surgery, trauma and orthopaedics. His experience encompasses complex surgical care, trauma management, reconstructive procedures and multidisciplinary clinical practice. He has also undertaken specialist training through courses including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Basic Surgical Skills, Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB), and microsurgical skills training.
Research & Publications
Dr. Acharya has demonstrated an active interest in evidence-based surgical research. His publications include first-author work on body contouring techniques, fat-graft longevity and volume retention, and tranexamic acid in trauma patients, including a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. He has also contributed as a co-author to research examining minimally invasive versus conventional mitral valve surgery and the application of robotics in reconstructive and plastic surgery.
His research portfolio also includes a case report on pressure sores at an unusual site and ongoing work on staged reconstruction of dystrophic calcinosis cutis using a biodegradable temporizing matrix and delayed split-thickness skin grafting.
Audits & Quality Improvement
He has actively participated in clinical audits and quality-improvement initiatives. His work on revising LAOPs checklist compliance at Lister Hospital reportedly achieved 100% compliance and eradication of never events within the plastic surgery department. Other audit projects have addressed documentation and management of extracapsular neck-of-femur fractures and waiting times for laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute calculous cholecystitis.
Presentations & Conferences
Dr. Acharya has presented his research and audit work at international, national, regional and local forums. Notably, he delivered an oral presentation on “Maximizing the Longevity and Volume Retention of Fat Grafts: Advances in Clinical Practice” at the SOFCHIE Congress in Paris in 2025. He has also presented audit and clinical research findings through ASiT and other professional meetings.
Teaching & Mentorship
Alongside clinical and research activities, Dr. Acharya contributes to medical education through regular teaching of Imperial College medical students, bedside teaching, small-group clinical sessions and mentorship of junior doctors in clinical practice and audits. He has also served as a demonstrator at the PRAS 2026 Plastic Surgery Conference. His Train the Trainers: Developing Teaching Skills qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons further supports his commitment to academic teaching.
Professional Development
His continuing professional development includes specialist surgical and trauma courses, BAPRAS and BAAPS educational programmes, microsurgical skills training, and professional representative training through the British Medical Association. These activities demonstrate a sustained commitment to advancing his clinical and academic expertise.
Eligibility for Young Researcher Award
Dr. Pawan Acharya is eligible for the Young Researcher Award in Scientific Laurels based on his emerging research profile, first-author publications, systematic review and meta-analysis work, clinical case research, presentations at international and national conferences, and involvement in clinical audits and quality-improvement initiatives. His combination of clinical training, research productivity, academic presentations, teaching involvement and commitment to evidence-based surgical practice demonstrates strong potential for continued contribution to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
