Professor (Dr.) S. S. Jain is a distinguished transportation engineering expert and former professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. He obtained his B.E. in Civil Engineering (1977), M.Tech in Highway and Traffic Engineering (1979), and Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering (1987) from the then University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee).

With more than four decades of teaching, research, and consultancy experience, Prof. Jain has made extensive contributions to transportation engineering and infrastructure development. His core areas of expertise include pavement management systems, transport infrastructure systems, urban transport planning and design, transport–environment interaction, intelligent transport systems, public transport system integration, and road traffic safety.

Throughout his career, he has supervised 22 Ph.D. scholars and more than 150 M.Tech theses, significantly contributing to the development of skilled professionals in transportation engineering.

Significant Achievements

Prof. Jain has an exceptional academic and professional record marked by:

  • Publication of over 700 research papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings.

  • Authorship of one book and editorship of two international conference proceedings on roads and road transport.

  • Completion of 32 sponsored research projects, including three nationally coordinated projects focusing on urban transport–environment interaction, road traffic safety, and integrated public transport systems.

  • Consultancy involvement in over 150 infrastructure projects, including:

    • Development of 1700 km of State Highways in Bihar.

    • Maintenance and strengthening of more than 1000 km of urban roads in Delhi.

He has also been honored with 52 medals, prizes, and awards, including the University Gold Medal, the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award from Indian Roads Congress, and the prestigious President of India Prize from Institution of Engineers (India).
