Dr. Atindra Datta is a distinguished anatomist and medical educator with approximately 38 years of teaching, academic, and professional experience in Anatomy, Embryology, and Neuroscience. He began his academic career at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as a resident in Anatomy in 1979 and subsequently served in the West Bengal Medical Education Service from 1984 until his voluntary retirement in 2005. He later continued his international academic career at Saba University, the Medical University of the Americas, and St. James School of Medicine, Anguilla, where he served as Professor of Anatomy and Embryology. From 2020 to 2022, he contributed as a Neuroscience teacher at All Saints University College of Medicine, now Richmond Gabriel University, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

His academic progression includes appointments as Resident, Demonstrator, Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Reader, Associate Professor, and Professor, with approximately 24 years of experience at the Professor level.

Teaching & Postgraduate Mentorship

Dr. Datta has extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Since his early years at BHU, he has been actively involved in postgraduate teaching and has independently guided three postgraduate students in thesis research. His teaching expertise encompasses Anatomy, Embryology, and Neuroscience.

He has also served as an undergraduate and postgraduate examiner for numerous universities, including BHU, Calcutta, Burdwan, Gauhati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Manipur, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Sikkim Manipal.

Academic & Administrative Leadership

Dr. Datta has held several important academic and administrative responsibilities. He served as Head of the Department of Anatomy at Burdwan Medical College and NRS Medical College, Kolkata. He also served as a member of the Undergraduate Council of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

During his international academic career, he served as a Course Director at the Medical University of the Americas and St. James School of Medicine. His leadership experience also includes teaching Neuroscience at Richmond Gabriel University in the Caribbean.

Research Contributions

Dr. Datta's research career has primarily focused on neuroanatomy, developmental anatomy, cerebellar development, embryology, congenital anomalies, and experimental anatomy. His early research investigated the effects of cyclophosphamide and other agents on the postnatal development of the rat cerebellum, including changes in Purkinje cells, external granular layers, neuronal differentiation, and cerebellar architecture.

His later scholarly work expanded into anatomical case studies and contemporary anatomical interpretations, including fetus-in-fetu, supernumerary nostril, proboscis lateralis, polyrhinia, craniopagus, and phenotypic developmental abnormalities.

Publications & Scholarly Work

Dr. Datta has authored and co-authored numerous research papers, case reports, and scientific abstracts published in journals relating to anatomy, physiology, experimental biology, neuroscience, and medical research. His publication record extends from the early 1980s through 2025, demonstrating sustained scholarly engagement over several decades.

Notable publications include research on:

  • Postnatal development of the cerebellar cortex
  • Purkinje cell differentiation and developmental heterogeneity
  • Effects of cyclophosphamide on cerebellar development
  • Structural changes in the small intestine during lactation
  • Fetus-in-fetu
  • Anatomical perspectives of COVID-19
  • Supernumerary nostril, proboscis lateralis, and polyrhinia
  • Anatomical interpretation of craniopagus
  • Phenotypic femininity and chromosomal influences
  • Morphological variations involving multiple noses

Books & Academic Writing

Dr. Datta has authored the book “Achieving Yoga Mind Power” and has published a review and case-based scholarly work on Fetus-in-Fetu. His interests therefore extend beyond conventional anatomical research into interdisciplinary subjects connecting anatomy, human development, cognition, and traditional concepts.

Conferences & Academic Engagement

He has actively participated in national and state-level anatomical conferences, where he presented scientific papers and abstracts. He also contributed to academic organization by organizing a state-level Anatomical Conference at NRS Medical College, Kolkata, in 2004.

Overall Contribution

With nearly four decades of experience in medical education, Dr. Atindra Datta has made sustained contributions to anatomical sciences, medical teaching, postgraduate mentorship, academic administration, examination, research, and international medical education. His long-standing career across India and the Caribbean, together with his extensive teaching experience, research publications, academic leadership, and continued scholarly activity, reflects a substantial contribution to the field of medical and anatomical sciences.

Eligibility for Outstanding Scientist Award

Dr. Atindra Datta is eligible for the Outstanding Scientist Award in Scientific Laurels based on his extensive academic career, approximately 38 years of teaching and professional experience, long-standing contributions to Anatomy, Embryology and Neuroscience, postgraduate supervision, research publications, case reports and scientific presentations.
