Dr. Ramesha T J is an accomplished scientist, academician, fisheries professional, and extension specialist with extensive experience in research, teaching, institutional development, and rural outreach. He served as Senior Scientist and Head of a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in the North-East Region, located in the tribal-dominated Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh, for an impressive 10 years and 6 months. His professional career demonstrates a strong commitment to taking scientific knowledge, appropriate technologies, and livelihood opportunities to remote and tribal farming communities.

He also served as an Assistant Professor at the College of Marine Science and Technology, Massawa, Eritrea, North-East Africa, gaining valuable international academic and professional exposure. During his doctoral programme at Fisheries College, Mangaluru, he was awarded a Junior Merit Scholarship in recognition of his academic performance.

Remote Area and Tribal Community Experience

A major distinction of Dr. Ramesha T J’s career is his long-term service in geographically remote and tribal-dominated areas of Arunachal Pradesh. During his tenure at the KVK, he implemented programmes focusing on fisheries, agriculture, livestock, food processing, value addition, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods.

He facilitated the establishment of community fish-smoking kilns in 15 remote tribal fisher-folk villages under a CSR-supported sustainable livelihood programme. He also supported the establishment of demonstration units for rainwater harvesting, poultry, fisheries, community fish-smoking, vermicomposting, mushroom cultivation, and fish processing.

Extension, Entrepreneurship & Capacity Building

Dr. Ramesha T J has made substantial contributions to farmer capacity building and entrepreneurship development. He organized EDP programmes on value addition of locally available wild fruits and vegetables for 45 tribal farmers, as well as programmes on fish value addition for 85 tribal Self-Help Group members.

He further organized skill-oriented institutional capacity-building programmes for 25 tribal farm women and vocational training programmes for 90 tribal farm women. These initiatives helped promote income generation, value addition, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihood opportunities among rural and tribal communities.

Farm Innovation & Technology Transfer

His extension work has included the identification, promotion, and documentation of several farm innovations, including manually and tractor-operated winnowing fans, an orange fruit harvester, liquid organic manure, and fish traps. He also developed information repositories covering fodder cultivation, Vanaraja poultry farming, farm innovations, finger millet value addition, and Azolla cultivation.

His work demonstrates an effective combination of scientific knowledge and locally appropriate technologies to address practical challenges faced by farmers in remote regions.

Institutional Development & Outreach

Dr. Ramesha T J contributed significantly to institutional development and outreach through exposure visits, demonstrations, ICT initiatives, and collaboration with national research and development institutions. He organized multiple exposure visits for tribal farming communities with support from institutions including ICAR institutes, NABARD, the Cashew and Cocoa Board, and other agricultural and fisheries research organizations.

He also helped establish ICT facilities and developed farmer-oriented communication materials. Notably, he developed an Audio-CD on Farmers' Clubs in Assamese and Adi tribal dialects, documented four agri-folk songs of the Idu Mishmi tribe, and published a book on edible mushrooms in the Idu Mishmi dialect, thereby integrating local language and indigenous knowledge into agricultural extension.

Professional Leadership & National Contribution

His professional responsibilities extended beyond field-level extension. He served as a member of the committee constituted by the Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), New Delhi, for modification of KVK guidelines for the North-East Hilly Region. He also compiled and presented fisheries activities of North-East KVKs at the Annual Zonal Workshop held in Guwahati.

As the coordinator for Arunachal Pradesh, he played a role in mobilizing farm innovators in fisheries for presentation at the Farm Innovators Meet held in Sikkim.

International Exposure

Dr. Ramesha T J possesses valuable international experience through his service as an Assistant Professor in Massawa, Eritrea, and participation in an international workshop organized by the European Commission in the Netherlands on periphyton-based aquaculture at Mymensingh Agriculture University, Bangladesh.
