Dr. Kannan C. S. Warrier is a distinguished forestry scientist, academician, researcher, and institutional leader with more than 30 years of experience in forestry research, specializing in forest genetics, tree improvement, clonal forestry, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable forestry. He spent approximately 26 years as a scientist at the ICFRE–Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), where he rose to the position of Scientist G (Chief Scientist). Since April 2024, he has been serving as the Director of Kerala Forest Research Institute (KSCSTE–KFRI), Peechi, on a five-year deputation.
An exceptional academic, Dr. Warrier secured First Rank in both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Forestry from Kerala Agricultural University and has received a 10/10 VIDWAN score under the Union Ministry of Education.
Research Expertise & Pioneering Contributions
Dr. Warrier has made seminal contributions to forest genetic resource conservation, tree improvement, clonal forestry, provenance evaluation, biodiversity conservation, and agroforestry. His research has had direct applications for farmers, tree growers, forest departments, and wood-based industries.
As a pioneer in clonal forestry, he developed and released three productive clones of Casuarina equisetifolia suitable for sodic soils, helping convert salt-affected and otherwise unproductive lands into productive resources. Through extensive genetic selection, he identified 139 crook-free Plus Trees of Thespesia populnea and 155 Plus Trees of Haldina cordifolia in Kerala. He also established and evaluated provenance, progeny, and clonal trials involving Thespesia, Melia, Haldina, Tamarind, Casuarina, Leucaena, and Eucalyptus across different states.
Among his notable innovations are India's first cost-effective hydroponic propagation protocols for Thespesia and Casuarina, along with rejuvenation and mass-propagation techniques for Casuarina. His work has strengthened the availability of improved planting material for forestry and agroforestry.
Biodiversity Conservation & Ecosystem Restoration
Dr. Warrier has made significant contributions to biodiversity conservation, particularly through his extensive research on sacred groves and native tree diversity. He mapped 1,128 sacred groves in Alappuzha district, demonstrating their exceptional floristic importance and ecological value.
For more than two decades, he has also worked toward preserving and revitalising his ancestral Kavu in Haripad as a living refuge for native biodiversity. His broader work encompasses degraded-land restoration, forest and mangrove conservation, genetic-resource preservation, and ecosystem restoration, directly supporting the objectives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Scientific Publications & Scholarly Contributions
Dr. Warrier has an extensive scholarly record comprising approximately 327 publications, including 18 books/manuals, 41 book chapters, 66 national publications, 41 international publications, 21 reports, 32 popular articles, 12 brochures, and 96 environmental-awareness posters. He also holds a patent, Patent No. 290429, for estimating tree mean diameter using digital images.
He serves as an Associate Editor of Springer Nature's Agroforestry Systems, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bamboo and Rattan, and Subject Editor of the Journal of Threatened Taxa. He has also contributed as a peer reviewer for 44 scientific journals.
National & International Collaborations
His professional contributions extend beyond India. He participated in the US Forest Service Tree Crop Improvement Programme under USAID, evaluated the FAO ex-situ forest genetic resources programme, and collaborated with institutions including CSIRO Australia and the University of Hawaii.
Through these collaborations, he facilitated the introduction of 39 international Casuarina provenances and 32 Leucaena seed sources, thereby broadening India's genetic resources and supporting the development of productive farm-forestry varieties.
Policy, Institutional & Technical Leadership
Dr. Warrier has combined scientific research with policy development and field-level implementation. He served as Nodal Officer for Kerala's Cauvery River rejuvenation project, evaluated the National Afforestation Programme, and led Kerala's team during the national reassessment of forest types, a major scientific exercise undertaken for the first time since 1968.
He has advised Forest Development Corporations in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra on high-yielding clonal plantations and has provided technical leadership in forestry, afforestation, compensatory afforestation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable plantation management.
As Director of KFRI, he has played a major role in strengthening institutional research capacity and reportedly facilitated the mobilisation of ₹17.46 crore through 47 externally funded scientific projects over a two-year period. He has also promoted national and international institutional collaborations through MoUs with organisations including NCBS-TIFR and the Odisha Bamboo Development Agency.
Contributions to Tribal Communities & Traditional Knowledge
A notable dimension of Dr. Warrier's work is the integration of forestry science with community development and traditional knowledge. He played an instrumental role in securing the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kannadipaya, a traditional bamboo mat produced by tribal communities of Kerala, making it the first tribal product from Kerala to receive GI protection.
Under his leadership at KFRI, initiatives have also been advanced to modernise bamboo and reed-based livelihoods and establish Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Hubs for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, including the Kadar, Cholanaikkan, and Kattunaikkan communities.
Academic Mentorship & Scientific Leadership
Dr. Warrier has contributed substantially to academic governance and research mentorship. He has overseen the academic progression of 39 doctoral research scholars through structured Research Advisory Committee meetings. He has served on the Executive Committee and State Council of KSCSTE and on the Boards of Studies and academic bodies of institutions including Kerala Agricultural University and Nirmala College.
He has also organised and chaired major national and international scientific events, including the 5th World Teak Conference 2025, which brought together participants from 41 countries, and numerous programmes focused on tropical forestry, forest landscape restoration, GIS, remote sensing, and capacity building.
